The Lion - royal, strong and bold

The lion has always been a symbol of royal power and strength – the king of beasts! In Proverbs 30: 30, among the three creatures which are “majestic in pace” and “stately in walk”, is the lion “which is mighty among beasts and does not turn away from any.” Exceptions were Samson, who was given exceptional strength by God, and young David with his shepherd heart whom God enabled to overcome both lion and bear. From such events, and over 100 references to lions in the Bible, we can assume that lions were once not uncommon in Israel.

Lion in the Bible

The lion is a picture of boldness. “The righteous are bold as a lion.” Proverbs 28: 1. When he is resting after a good meal (and the male lion especially spends most of the day resting), “who shall rouse him?” Genesis 49: 9.

That was the Jacob’s prophecy over Judah, and Jesus is called the "lion of the tribe of Judah" and “the prince of peace.” He overcame and ruled over all flesh. He was always in rest. Nothing and nobody hindered him from obeying his heavenly Father and destroying all the works of the devil.

In the Old Covenant Israel is compared with a lioness. It applies even more to those who love Jesus in the New Covenant. If the Bridegroom is a lion, His bride is a lioness. "Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions?" (Job 38: 39). How blessed to be one who can speak words of life because we have been nourished by God's Word, and can teach others what has helped us obtain joy and peace through doing God’s will .

The young lions learn to be obedient and devour every human tendency that opposes God's will. That is everything that has to do with "I", "me" and "mine". Then the life of Christ, all that is genuinely noble and good, becomes manifest in our lives.

"I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one." I John 2: 14). Let us serve God with all our heart, and allow nothing and nobody to stop us from fulfilling God’s Word, just as Jesus did!
